The question to ask a free tier
Free tiers withhold in two different ways, and they are not equally survivable. One caps how much you can connect. The other caps how much of your own money you are allowed to see.
The first is an inconvenience you can plan around: you know on day one that you have five wallets and you either fit or you do not. The second only bites once you have done the work, because you cannot tell that a number is missing until you go looking for it.
So the honest way to read any pricing page is to ignore the feature list and find the sentence that says what free does not show you. Below is that sentence for each tool, with the page it came from.
Koinly free: everything except the document
Koinly free is the most generous tier in this comparison and it should be said first. Portfolio tracking, a capital-gains preview, DeFi and NFT import, FIFO, LIFO and average cost, transfer matching, spam detection, API sync and CSV import are all included. What free withholds is exactly one thing: the downloadable tax report.
The catch is arithmetic rather than policy. Free counts to 10,000 transactions, and that ceiling covers your whole account rather than each exchange. A light trader may never reach it. Anyone running bots or farming on-chain will.

CoinTracker free: read the table, not the card
CoinTracker free includes the mobile app, DeFi support and spam detection, and gives you a current portfolio value plus a tax summary with no tax forms.
It also contradicts itself on the same page, which is worth knowing before you commit an import. The free plan card advertises a portfolio value; the plan comparison table further down marks portfolio tracking and performance tracking as not included on free. We are not going to resolve that for them. We are going to suggest that you read the table rather than the card.

CoinStats free: 20,000 transactions, and no profit or loss
CoinStats gives a free tier 10 portfolios, 20,000 transactions and 10 syncs per portfolio per day, which is a lot of room. The cap is not the interesting part.
The interesting part is that profit and loss is a Premium feature, along with custom alerts, the portfolio heatmap and asset-allocation analytics. A free CoinStats account tells you what you hold and what it is worth. Whether you are up or down is the paid question, and for most people that was the question.

Rotki free: the graph is bounded, not your history
Rotki is open source, self-hosted and privacy-first, and if that is what you want then none of what follows should put you off: it is the right tool for that requirement and we are not.
Its free tier is bounded in two places. Asset movement matching, the feature that recognises a transfer between your own accounts, starts on Basic at EUR 25 a month. And free users see the last two weeks of the net-worth graph, with a cap of the 1,000 most recent events that also bounds the profit-and-loss report.
Being precise about that second one, because the sloppy version of this sentence would flatter us: Rotki bounds the graph and the report. It does not truncate your history.

Zerion free: most of it, minus the exchanges
Zerion says most of its DeFi portfolio tracker is completely free, and reserves detailed profit and loss for Premium. Its real boundary is not a tier at all.
Zerion tracks non-custodial wallets, and states that it will not be able to show assets you own on centralized exchanges. No amount of paying changes that, because it is a product boundary rather than a paywall. If your coin sits partly on an exchange, half the story is out of frame.

What ours withholds
Our free tier caps how many accounts you connect: 2 exchanges and 5 wallets, one account per exchange, chosen from 11 exchanges and 52 chains. That is the whole cap.
Inside those accounts nothing is held back. No transaction ceiling, no history cut-off, no bounded graph, no paywalled profit and loss. Your full reconstructed history, cost basis, realised and unrealised profit, the flow maps, the asset journeys, transfer matching and spam filtering are all on the free tier.
Pro, at $12.99 a month or $120 a year, adds live auto-syncing, the advisor layer, exports, alerts, several accounts on the same exchange, and unlimited connections. It does not unlock a number that free was hiding from you. The pricing page has the line-by-line version, and because every tool on this page asks for an API key or an address, it is worth reading how we handle the credentials you give us before you hand them to any of us.
And the thing we withhold from everyone, paid included: there is no downloadable tax report here at any price. If filing is the job, two of the tools on this page do it and we do not.
How to choose
Work out which failure would actually cost you something. If it is "the report I need is behind a plan", that is Koinly and CoinTracker, and it is a fair trade because the report is the product. If it is "I cannot tell whether I am up or down", that is CoinStats free. If it is "I cannot see back past two weeks on the graph, and my transfers are not being matched", that is Rotki free. If it is "my exchange balances are missing", that is Zerion by design.
And if it is "I have more than five wallets", that is us. We would rather you hit our wall on day one, with the whole picture visible for the accounts you did connect, than discover in April that the part you needed was the part behind the paywall.
We would rather you read our own limits before you trust a page where we chose the comparison. No downloadable tax reports, no live DeFi position valuation, minimal NFT support, no mobile app, and history that stops where each exchange API stops: what WhereItGoes does not do
